Judge in Trump election case pauses court deadlines as appeal is heard on presidential immunity

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s election interference case in Washington will be put on hold while the former president further pursues his claims that he is immune from prosecution, a judge ruled Wednesday. The decision from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan raises the likelihood that Trump’s trial on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, currently scheduled for March 4, will be postponed as the appeal of a legally untested argument winds through the courts. The issue is of paramount significance to both sides given that a court ruling in Trump’s favor would presumably derail the case and because a protracted appeal could result in a significant postponement of the proceedings, including until potentially after next year’s election, that would benefit the ex-president as he seeks to reclaim the White House. The three-page order is the latest volley in a simmering dispute over the scope of presidential power that has the potential to be dec...Dolphins place starting center Connor Williams on season-ending IR as injuries mount

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins placed their starting center Connor Williams on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Monday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans.Williams, who will become a free agent in March, suffered the injury on the Dolphins’ first offensive series in a 28-27 home loss to Tennessee that knocked Miami out of the top spot in the AFC.The loss of Williams — one of Miami’s best offensive linemen — was felt on that same offensive series. A bad snap exchange between backup center Liam Eichenberg and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa resulted in a fumble that gave the Titans the ball at the Tennessee 2-yard line.Tagovailoa shouldered the blame for the mishandled snap, but added that it was an adjustment going from Williams to Eichenberg.“I’ve got to catch the snap,” he said. “I don’t get as many reps with Liam in practice. I get some reps as far as quarterback-center exchange, but because Conno...Rasta Pasta / Jrk!, Miami

DETROIT (AP) — Authorities filed a murder charge Wednesday in the October slaying of a Detroit synagogue leader, alleging that she was killed by a stranger who broke into her home. There was not a “shred of evidence” that Samantha Woll was killed as a result of antisemitism or any hate crime, prosecutor Kym Worthy said.A 28-year-old Detroit man was charged with murder and two other crimes. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf.Samantha Woll, 40, was found dead outside her home, east of downtown Detroit, on Oct. 21, hours after returning from a wedding. Investigators believe she was attacked inside the residence.“There are no facts to suggest this defendant knew Ms. Woll,” Worthy said.Police said a person of interest was in custody over the weekend. A different person who was in custody was released in November.“This was an extraordinarily sad and tragic case,” Worthy said. He added, “This takes time. We never want to rush to judgment.”Woll was presid...16-year-old boy injured in Hallandale Beach hit-and-run, mother speak out amid search for driver

A heartbroken mother is on a mission to find the driver who struck her teenage son in Hallandale Beach and took off, leaving him lying on the street. Speaking with 7News from his hospital bed on Wednesday, 16-year-old Tylan Jackson said he was walking home from school along Northwest Seventh Terrace, near OB Johnson Park, when he was hit by a driver who took off, at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.“I was crossing the road, and I just got hit,” he said. “It’s a mother’s worst nightmare,” said Shantrell Stanley, the teen’s mother. While Jackson said he doesn’t remember much about the incident, Stanley said someone who lives near where the crash happened saw everything.“He was dragged about a block and a half, and the car, she told me that the car stopped — I guess he was released — then she said that the car just took off,” said Stanley. Paramedics rushed Jackson, a junior at Hallandale Beach High School, to Memorial Re...The two days that salvaged a climate deal

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Hopes for a historic climate deal appeared dead. The U.S., EU and a host of other countries were pushing for the COP28 summit, held in the glitzy petro-metropolis of Dubai, to yield a worldwide commitment to end the use of fossil fuels. But a fierce counterattack from Saudi Arabia and its oil-producing partners in OPEC had beaten that effort back — leading, by Monday night, to a draft agreement that one Pacific island minister labeled a “death warrant” for communities threatened by the warming planet’s rising seas.“I was very depressed,” Danish Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen said afterward. It looked as though the Saudis had prevailed, just as they had succeeded three months earlier in defanging a fossil fuel proposal at G20 talks in Goa, India. But by Wednesday morning, it all turned around. Nearly 200 nations, the Saudis included, consented to a compromise deal that fell short of promising an end to fossil fuels — but which acknowledg...Boston Mayor Wu answers questions after email invite to ‘Electeds of Color Holiday Party’ mistakenly sent to entire city council

During the final Boston City Council meeting of the year, Mayor Michelle Wu gives gifts to outgoing councilors. Not everyone was in the mood to celebrate on Wednesday, though, after the city disinvited white councilors to an upcoming holiday party. “You don’t want me at a party, I’m not going to come to a party,” District 3 Councilor Frank Baker said. 7NEWS obtained an email sent to all city councilors Tuesday. The email was from one of the mayor’s staffers and read “I cordially invite you and a guest to the Electeds of Color Holiday Party.”Fifteen minutes later, another email went out, with the staffer clarifying “I did send that to everyone by accident, I apologize if my email may have offended or came across as so.” “I think we’ve all been in a position at one point where an email went out and there was a mistake in the recipients,” Wu said Wednesday. “So, it was truly just an honest mistake.”The upcoming party was scheduled to be held at the city-owned Parkma...Red Sox to showcase top prospects as part of new MLB Spring Breakout event

Coaches and athletic directors who have an appetite for adding a wins proponent to the current power rankings system will be starving. The MIAA Tournament Management Committee voted 11-5 against a motion which would have added a fourth column to the current formula for the present power rankings. A later motion to allow football to have a wins proponent on a two-year trial basis was defeated 12-4.“I just don’t want to have a knee-jerk reaction to things,” said TMC chairman Shaun Hart, the athletic director at Burlington. “Jim Clark has put a lot of time and effort into the rankings and the data shows it is working.”One of the biggest advocates of adding a wins proponent is Wellesley athletic director John Brown. Representing District 7, which consists of schools from the Bay State Conference, Hockomock League and Tri-Valley League, Brown was adamant schools within his representation are in favor of putting more emphasis on wins.“The Bay State Conference had nine state champions...Former SDSU punter Matt Araiza speaks out after rape claims dismissed

SAN DIEGO — Former San Diego State and Buffalo Bills punter Matt Araiza spoke out for the first time during a press conference Wednesday morning after sexual assault allegations levied at him were dismissed from an ongoing lawsuit.Alongside his attorneys, Araiza, 23, reflected on how the lawsuit, which stemmed from a claimed gang rape of a then-underage girl at an off-campus house party in October 2021, changed the trajectory of his life.“It has changed me a lot," Araiza said of the time after the lawsuit was filed about a year and a half ago, in August 2022. Shortly following the complaint's filing, the punter was released from the Bills. Second lawsuit filed in USD hazing allegations case: report “My name, my reputation — this will be tied to me forever, that won’t go away," he continued. "It was tough to watch the pain that it caused my family, because I have been proven innocent but they for sure had absolutely nothing to do with this."According to the lawyers for both parties...Latest news
